Shopping around Dundee is independent and personal. Brook Street in Broughty Ferry has a family-run bookshop with signed editions, book clubs and author events, and a jewellery workshop selling handmade pieces by graduates of Scotland's art schools. In the city, a yellow-fronted optician on Johnston's Lane, off the Westport, fills its tall wooden cabinets with designer and vintage frames. Out at Muirhead, north-west of the city, a farm shop in a long barn stocks only Scottish produce, from vegetables and bread to jams and oats. If you're self-catering nearby, stop at the farm shop on your way in.

Pretty Fly Workshop.

Pretty Fly Workshop is a jewellery shop and workshop at the east end of Brook Street, run by two graduates of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee. Its glass cases hold handmade work by independent makers, many of them from Scotland's art schools, alongside ceramics, textiles, prints, homeware and toys. Behind the counter is a busy workbench, where the owners take on repairs, engraving and enamel work, and make pieces to order, from engagement rings to cufflinks. It's the place to find a present nobody else will have.

Fisher & Donaldson, Dundee.

Fisher & Donaldson began in 1919, when two brothers-in-law, Willie Fisher and Davie Donaldson, came home from the First World War and spent their demob money on a bakery in Cupar. It's still a family business, and its Dundee shop has a pink front with old-fashioned lettering over the windows. The counters are full of traditional Scottish baking, from morning rolls and pies to tarts, shortbread and patisserie. The thing to try is the fudge doughnut, the bakery's most popular bake, made to a recipe the family keeps to itself. Take a box away with you.

Land O'Spex.

Land O'Spex, which plenty of Dundonians still call by its old name, Spex Pistols, is an independent optician on Johnston's Lane, off the Westport. The shopfront alone is worth the detour, with bright yellow woodwork, small-paned windows full of frames and a big painted mural of a woman in white cat's-eye glasses on the wall beside it. Inside, tall wooden cabinets hold rows of designer, vintage and classic frames among old cameras and curiosities. Come here for a pair of glasses unlike anyone else's. The staff are known for being helpful.
