Argyll's shops are full of island character. Find a craft shop on Iona that has been open since 1965, a co-operative of Iona's own makers, and a red phone box on Islay turned into an honesty shop. There are galleries and design shops on Oban's George Street, a long-established family shop in Tobermory, and a pottery on an Islay farm. Leave room in the car for treasures.

Strachur Smiddy Museum and Crafts.

A working smiddy from the late 1700s until 1955, Strachur, with its cobbles and beams, has been beautifully restored. The original forge, bellows and anvil are now put to use as part of the working museum on weekends over the summer. There’s also a shop with a quirky selection of local crafts.
