Introduction

This picturesque fishing village on the Tarbat Peninsula has a long sandy beach, a small harbour, designed by Thomas Telford in the 19th century bobbing with fishing boats and a waterfront lined with pretty pastel-painted cottages. It's also the only village on the east coast to face due west – so the sunsets are spectacular. The area has a rich history; the Romans set up camp here, it's the site of the first Pictish monastery in Scotland and D-Day landing exercises took place nearby. To delve into Portmahomack's Pictish Past dip into the Tarbat Discovery Centre on its edge, the museum housed in an old chapel
