Welcome

Seeing new art inside an old church is a real treat, and Kilmorack Gallery does it beautifully.

The church went up in 1786 as Beauly's parish church, and until a new kirk was built in the village in the mid-1800s, its people made the uphill walk out here to worship. Behind the elegant Georgian front, the inside is a Gothic surprise from 1835, with pink plaster, rose windows in the gables and mermaid-shaped hooks for the chandeliers. The building stood empty from 1972 until Tony Davidson opened it as a gallery in 1997, and today it shows paintings and sculpture, with the exhibitions changing through the year and the work for sale. The River Beauly runs just across the road, and you'll know you've arrived when you spot the large lizard on the wall. Give yourself an hour, and check the opening days before a winter visit.
