Near Peebles, Kailzie Gardens is a lovely place to spend a slow hour or two.

At its centre is a historic walled garden, with deep herbaceous borders, rows of roses and a range of restored glasshouses where fuchsias and hanging baskets spill over the paths.

Beyond the walls, woodland walks follow the Kailzie Burn, and an arboretum holds rare Scottish trees. The celebrated Laburnum Arch makes a golden tunnel to wander through when it flowers. The garden changes with the seasons, from snowdrops and daffodils in spring to roses and dahlias in summer and bright colour in autumn.

The estate also has a cafe and plants for sale. The gardens open from Wednesday to Sunday through the season, and children under 12 go free.

Making the scenic drive between Peebles and Traquair even more appealing is this rambling Tweed Valley attraction, with 15 acres of burn-threaded woodland (don’t miss the winter snowdrops) surrounding a spectacular walled garden, complete with rose beds, laburnum arches and a fine example of a classic Mackenzie & Moncur glasshouse. The grounds also provide prime osprey-breeding territory.
