Places to Stay in Inverness-shire

From the shores of Loch Ness to the old pinewoods of Glen Affric, Inverness-shire is big, open Highland country with plenty of room to explore. These are our favourite places to stay across it, from a Victorian lodge on its own estate to cosy cottages and cabins.

Inverness-shire is home to Loch Ness, the Great Glen and the pinewoods of Glen Affric, with mountains and moorland stretching away on every side. It's lovely country for walking, cycling and boat trips on the loch, and it's easy to fill a week without ever running out of places to go.

We've picked out places to stay right across the region. In Fort Augustus there's a hotel built in 1869 as a station hotel, with a restaurant recommended by Michelin and some rooms looking out over Loch Ness. On Loch Affric, a Victorian lodge can be taken over by a large party, with its own sauna and hot tub. There are cottages on a castle estate near Dores, including a restored bothy for two, and log cabins on a Highland hillside. Near Nairn, cabins come with a hot tub to soak in. Most of them welcome dogs too.
