Wester Ross
Beinn Eighe pinewoods and Torridon sandstone.
These are the places to see the wild side of Wester Ross close up. Near Kinlochewe, Beinn Eighe became Britain's first National Nature Reserve in 1951, and its trails lead into Caledonian pinewood where granny pines have stood for more than 350 years. Loch Maree stretches away under the mountains, its islands wooded with fragments of the old forest, where black-throated divers nest. High on the road to Shieldaig, a lay-by looks over Upper Loch Torridon to great walls of sandstone laid down around a billion years ago. In autumn, listen for red deer roaring across the hills during the rut.
You are up to date.
That is everything for today. Tomorrow's first posts go up in the morning. Or have the best of it in your inbox each morning in the Daily.
