Sutherland
Cleared townships and a roofless kirk.
Sutherland's past is written in its empty places. Above the beach east of Durness, the ruins of Ceannabeinne mark a farming township whose people rose against their clearance in 1841. On the cliffs south of Berriedale, the ruined houses of Badbea were built by families cleared from the straths, high in the wind. Near Durness, a roofless church of 1619 stands in its old kirkyard over Balnakeil Bay. The whole story is told in Bettyhill's old parish church, and a free centre by Loch Shin at Lairg covers the land and its people. The paths out to the ruins are short but often wet underfoot.
