At Charlottefield, a lodge for four on Atholl Estates near Pitlochry, the old woodshed next to the house now holds a wood-fired bath.

Charlottefield is a two-bedroom lodge at Tulliemet, on Atholl Estates in Highland Perthshire, under an ancient wood of oaks and birch, looking down to the River Tummel. The woodshed beside the house has been given a new job: it now shelters an outdoor wood-fired bath, made for two, with the logs included. The estate's idea is that you light it after a long walk to a loch or a climb up one of the nearby Munros, then lie back under the stars. One guest wrote that it was a treat even in the windiest, wettest weather. The only thing that stops it is a long freeze, when its water supply can ice up.

Inside Lassintullich House.

Lassintullich House is an eight-bedroom Victorian lodge for up to sixteen, two miles from Kinloch Rannoch at the foot of Schiehallion in Highland Perthshire. It has been restored in the spirit of Scottish country living, with a new kitchen, a traditional dining room that seats up to 20, and a drawing room and sitting room with fires for the evenings. Three of the bedrooms are master suites.

Drummond Castle's gardens lie just south of Crieff, Innerpeffray Library has lent books since 1680, and Loch Earn is a short drive up the strath.

At Redhill Retreat on Loch Rannoch, if nobody is booked into your cabin the day you leave, you can stay until noon.

Redhill Retreat is three micro cabins and a woodland sauna looking out onto Loch Rannoch, beside Schiehallion, and it is for adults only. Check-out is meant to be 10am. But the owners have a rule they call the Long Lie Guarantee: if your cabin isn't booked on the day you leave, you can stay on until 12 noon. All you have to do is ask on the day you arrive. In Kin, one of the three, that's two more hours behind floor-to-ceiling windows with the loch in view, or time to sit out on the deck before the drive home.

Inside The Cabin at Fairygreen.

The Cabin at Fairygreen is a tiny home for two on the Dunsinnan estate, twenty minutes north of Perth, standing in open fields with views over the Sidlaw hills and the Strathmore valley. It was built from Scottish timber, designed in Edinburgh and made in Inverness. Inside it's calm and simple: a king-size bed with Egyptian cotton linen facing a big picture window, a kitchenette with an oven and a mini fridge, and a large walk-in shower. The best of it is outside.
