From Skyfall to Dumbledore's island.

Lochaber has played its part in some of the biggest films of recent years. James Bond stopped his Aston Martin on the single-track road down Glen Etive in Skyfall, with the Buachaille behind him, and Glencoe has appeared in films from Monty Python and the Holy Grail to Harry Potter. The Hogwarts Express crosses the curving viaduct at Glenfinnan, and the steam train from Fort William to Mallaig makes the same journey every summer. On Loch Eilt, a little island of pines was the setting for Dumbledore's grave. Loch Shiel, beside the viaduct, has its own part in the Harry Potter films. Book the steam train well ahead, as summer seats go early.

In Scottish legend, the Cailleach, an ancient blue-skinned goddess with a single piercing eye, carved the mountains with her hammer and made the islands from peat dropped from her creel.

A creel is a basket carried on the back, and with it the Cailleach shaped Scotland as we know it, sculpting the glens as she went. When she was not spreading frost and snow, she protected the wild animals, above all her beloved deer, and Glen Nevis is known as one of her haunts. Hunters stalking stags there once heard a deep, strange singing in a language none of them understood, with a loud, rhythmic tapping. The oldest knew it was the Cailleach keeping time as she milked her herd of deer, and that they would catch nothing that day. Walk through the Nevis Gorge towards Steall Falls today and keep your ears open.

Loch Eilt, west of Fort William, appears in five of the Harry Potter films.

The loch is in every film from Chamber of Secrets to Deathly Hallows Part 2, and its little island, Eilean na Moine, is the real place behind Dumbledore's grave. The Jacobite steam train from Fort William, used in the films too, runs past the island, and passengers are told when it is coming.
