Red sandstone from Beauly to Fortrose.
Red sandstone runs through the old churches of this corner of the Highlands. In Beauly, the roofless church of a priory founded around 1230 for Valliscaulian monks stands among its gravestones at the end of the square. Over on the Black Isle, the ruined cathedral of the bishops of Ross sits in a leafy square in the middle of Fortrose, with fine vaulting and window tracery. In Inverness, St Andrew's Cathedral rises on the riverbank, a Gothic church of 1869 and one of the first cathedrals built in Britain after the Reformation. The priory at Beauly is free to visit all year, an easy stop on the road west.
