Clava's stones and Beauly's priory.

Some of Inverness-shire's oldest places have a storybook quality that has caught the eye of film and television makers. Just east of Inverness, the Clava Cairns are a prehistoric cemetery about 4,000 years old, with round cairns ringed by standing stones in a grove of beech above the River Nairn. In Beauly, the roofless red sandstone church of a priory founded around 1230 stands among its gravestones at the end of the square. Both are free to wander at any time of year. Go early or late, when the light is low and the sites are quiet.

True or false: the village of Beauly, near Inverness, got its name when Mary, Queen of Scots, called it 'un beau lieu', a beautiful place.

The Clava Cairns near Inverness, built around 2000 BC, are lined up with the midwinter sunset, and their stone circles helped shape the look of the television series Outlander.

The Bronze Age burial chambers combine standing stones and ring cairns more than 4,000 years old. Their careful alignment with the midwinter sunset gives an insight into the beliefs of Scotland's ancient inhabitants. Thousands of years later, the ringed cairns and the circles of standing stones around them informed the visual identity of the widely watched time-travel drama, and Clava has become a popular place to visit in recent years. For a quieter visit, the ring cairn at Corrimony is also 4,000 years old. Archaeologists found that a single woman was once buried inside, but who she was remains a mystery.
