Tain, Muir of Ord and Tomatin malts.

Whisky is made all around Inverness, and each distillery here sits in very different country. Beside the A9 south of the city, Tomatin has been making Highland single malt since 1897, with guided tours through the season. West of Inverness, the Singleton's distillery at Muir of Ord is open all year, with tastings and a bar and deli. Up the coast by the Dornoch Firth, just outside Tain, Glenmorangie is known for its very tall stills. Book tours ahead, especially in summer, and bring a driver or ask for a sample to take home.

Tomatin Distillery has released Cù Bòcan Creation #9, a single malt made to taste of sweet and salty popcorn.

The lightly peated whisky spent more than 17 years in American oak and Manzanilla sherry casks, and costs £45 from the distillery's own shop.
