Ben Chonzie

A Munro of 930 metres, number 249 of the 282.

The hill

Ben Chonzie has its part of Perth and Kinross to itself.

It stands between Glen Lednock, above the village of Comrie, and Glen Almond to the north, and the nearest Munro to it, Meall Greigh, is about sixteen kilometres away to the north-west.

The Glen Almond side is Auchnafree, a working sheep farm and managed moorland that counts Ben Chonzie and Auchnafree Hill as its two highest hills. The estate welcomes responsible walkers, and it is proud of its ground-nesting birds, a wide variety of them red listed. Loch Turret and its dam lie on the Glen Turret side.

The start
The usual start is Invergeldie in Glen Lednock, above Comrie. The route description and the map show the way from there.
The north side
Auchnafree Estate in Glen Almond, on the hill's north side, is a working sheep farm and managed moorland. It welcomes responsible access and counts Ben Chonzie among its walks.
Under snow
The avalanche service forecasts six other areas, not Ben Chonzie. No forecast does not mean no risk under snow.
Summit
Grid reference NN 773 308
Parking
For where to leave a car in Glen Lednock, read the route description.
From Glen Almond
Auchnafree's farm track from Newton Bridge is a private road, closed to the public's vehicles, but walkers are welcome.
Toilets and food
Do not count on a toilet at the start. Comrie is the village below the glen.

Before you go

Carry

  • A paper map and a compass, and the skill to use them
  • Waterproofs, warm layers, hat and gloves
  • Food and drink
  • A head torch, a whistle and a first aid kit
  • A survival bag
  • Boots with a good grip

Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.

If something goes wrong

  • Dial 999, ask for the police, then mountain rescue
  • Give a six-figure grid reference: the summit is NN 773 308
  • Say how many are hurt, how many are with you, and your number
  • Register to text 999 before the day: text the word register to 999

The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
