An Stuc

A Munro of 1,117 metres, number 35 of the 282.

The hill

An Stuc stands among the Ben Lawers hills in Perth and Kinross, with close neighbours on either side.

Meall Garbh is under a kilometre to the north-east, and Ben Lawers itself is about two kilometres to the south.

Ben Lawers is the highest mountain in Tayside and gives its name to a National Nature Reserve famous for its flora. The National Trust for Scotland bought the massif in 1950 to protect the arctic-alpine plants on its heights.

These are well-walked hills: the Trust says over 40,000 people explore them every year.

If you need help
Dial 999 or 112, ask for the police, then for mountain rescue.
The rescue team
Killin Mountain Rescue Team says most incidents in its area come from people slipping on hard snow without crampons, or losing their way in mist. If you have not been trained to use a map and compass in poor visibility, be prepared to turn back early by a safe route.
Before you go
No rescue team or national body describes the ground on An Stuc itself. Do not take that silence to mean it is an easy walk. Read a full route description from start to finish before you set out, and ask the National Trust for Scotland for its notes on the range: 01567 820988.
The reserve
The National Trust for Scotland's reserve takes in the summits and southern slopes of Ben Lawers and most of the Tarmachan range.

Grid reference NN 638 431
Deer stalking
Mountaineering Scotland says the first three weeks of October are the busiest of the stag stalking season. Pay close attention to signs and follow reasonable advice from land managers.
Parking
The National Trust for Scotland's leaflets name only its reserve car park. Ask the Trust about it, its charge and its toilets on 01567 820988 or benlawers@nts.org.uk.
The road
Perth and Kinross Council's list of closures shows the C448 Glenlyon closed from 19 to 23 October 2026. Read the list before you set out.
Bus
Perth and Kinross Council lists service 893 between Killin and Aberfeldy by Lawers, on a timetable dated 2018 for schooldays only, with no stop at the reserve car park. Check it before relying on it.

Going another day?

Choose the day you mean to climb.Near or far: the light you will have, and what the summit is likely to be doing.

Before you go

Carry

  • A paper map and a compass, and the skill to use them
  • Waterproofs, warm layers, hat and gloves
  • Food and drink
  • A head torch, a whistle and a first aid kit
  • A survival bag
  • Boots with a good grip

Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.

If something goes wrong

  • Dial 999, ask for the police, then mountain rescue
  • Give a six-figure grid reference: the summit is NN 638 431
  • Say how many are hurt, how many are with you, and your number
  • Register to text 999 before the day: text the word register to 999

The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
