Islands, Shetland Islands
Up Helly Aa
Introduction
The heart of the festival is a torchlit procession winding through Lerwick after nightfall, led by the Guizer Jarl and fiery squads of Viking-clad guizers. The march culminates in the lighting of a purpose-built longship. That moment gives way to a night of visitation and performance as guizer squads go door to door in halls across the town telling songs, skits and toasts one set at a time. The event is rooted in local effort, passing through generations as both performance and ritual. It marks a striking end to the Yule season, even as daylight begins to stretch again. Booking for visiting halls is limited; some sessions are unticketed.
