Thurso Golf Club

Founded in 1893, par 69 over 5,853 yards on the edge of Thurso. Tree-lined fairways look out over the Pentland Firth to Orkney.

Welcome

There aren’t many places to tee off farther north, and Thurso calls itself the most northerly eighteen-hole course on the UK mainland.

It sits on the south west edge of the town, looking out across the Pentland Firth to Orkney and Dunnet Head. Tree-lined fairways and raised greens give it a parkland feel, with heathland around them, and on its hill above the town several holes play straight into the prevailing wind. The club was founded in 1893 and first played on the links at Dunnet. Visitors are welcome all year, and a day’s golf is £50 in summer and £20 in winter.

Hole highlights

Thurso’s fairways are lined with trees and its greens are raised, and on the hill above the town several holes play into the prevailing wind.

  1. 4

    The 4th

    Par 5 · 504 yards

Probably the hardest hole on the course, and it usually plays straight into the prevailing wind. Trees line both sides, three ditches cross the fairway, and the green, sheltered by trees, is shared with the 1st.

  2. 13

    The 13th

    Par 4 · 279 yards

Thurso’s signature hole, a short par four over a burn, with heather on the left and rough on the right. The green can be driven, but into a strong wind it’s out of reach.

  3. 16

    The 16th

    Par 4 · 440 yards

The longest par four on the course, at 440 yards from the white tees. It’s stroke index 1, the hole the card rates the hardest.
