The Great Tapestry of Scotland
A purpose-built gallery in Galashiels for 160 stitched panels made by more than 1,000 people, telling Scotland's story from 8500 BC to today.
In a striking modern gallery on the High Street in Galashiels hangs a people's history of Scotland in wool.
More than 1,000 stitchers worked on it, using some 300 miles of wool, to create 160 panels that tell the country's story from 8500 BC to the present day.
The panels are full of life and humour. Mary Queen of Scots and Robert Burns are here, and the story runs right up to modern culture. Seen together, they make a long, colourful walk through Scottish history.
The gallery opened in August 2021, in the Borders' textile country, and it has a cafe and shop, audio guides and changing exhibitions. It opens Tuesday to Saturday, with last admission at 3.30pm, and booking online is a good idea.
