Springbank Distillery
Campbeltown's family distillery of 1828, the only one in Scotland to floor-malt all its barley and do everything on site.
Springbank, in the middle of Campbeltown, is one of the most admired distilleries in Scotland.
It was founded in 1828 and is still family owned, and it does almost everything by hand: it is the only distillery in Scotland that floor-malts all its own barley and carries out the whole process, from malting to bottling, on its own site.
That makes the tour worth taking. You see the barley spread across the malting floors, the kiln, the stills and the spirit safe, and the long, low warehouses where the casks lie. There is a bar, the Washback, serving whisky flights, light lunches and coffee. The visitor centre opens Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm, and the one-hour Springbank Tour costs £15. Tours sell out, so book ahead.
