Milnholm Cross
A tall medieval stone cross in a field south of Newcastleton, set up in memory of a laird of Mangerton, carved with initials and a sword.
In a field beside the road a mile south of Newcastleton, inside a ring of iron railings, stands a tall stone cross that has watched over Liddesdale for centuries.
It is the Milnholm Cross, set up in memory of a laird of Mangerton.
The cross is over eight feet tall, and close up you can make out the carving on its shaft: the initials MA and AA in relief, and beneath them the long outline of a sword with a rounded pommel and a straight guard. The very top is a later replacement.
An information board by the cross, part of the Reiver Trail, tells its story. It is a quick and rewarding stop on the road through Liddesdale, in the quiet green country of the old Border.
