There's plenty to do in Glasgow beyond the museums. Try cable wakeboarding on the canal at Port Dundas, five minutes from the city centre, or take a distillery tour in a Victorian pumphouse on the Clyde. Take tea in the last of Mackintosh's tearooms on Sauchiehall Street, or head out to the foot of the Campsies for a Highland distillery. Whatever the weather, you'll find something to fill a day.

Glasgow has had its own fold of Highland cattle for nearly two hundred years?

The Maxwells brought their herd, the Pollok Fold, down from the Highlands to graze the heavy clay of their estate. Around thirty breeding cows and three bulls live outside all year in the fields along Pollok Avenue in Pollok Country Park.

At the Riverside Museum in Glasgow, where the Kelvin meets the Clyde, children can walk a rebuilt cobbled street with its own subway station, and entry is free.

The street is lined with shops and houses recreated from Glasgow's past. There is no need to book. It opens 10am to 5pm, from 11am on Fridays and Sundays. Outside are the first purpose-built 3x3 basketball court in Glasgow and five built-in skate obstacles. Lifts reach every public area, and a Changing Places toilet is on the ground floor near reception.

For Mandy Maria, an artist who draws Scotland's mountains in soft pastel, a walk is almost psychedelic, because colour is what she notices most.

Mandy is a highly visual thinker, and a grubby gate, a particular light or the colour of a flower can stay in her memory and turn up later in a picture that looks little like the original scene. 'If I walk, it’s almost psychedelic. I’m very in tune with colour. It’s what I notice the most and want to translate on paper'. Her city commute takes her down Victoria Road and through Queen's Park in Glasgow. Back in the studio, music guides her. She grew up with the radio always on, and she works to a soundtrack of her own choosing, from 90s nostalgia and power ballads to Romy, LCD Soundsystem or even metal.

You can walk from the middle of Glasgow to four waterfalls without leaving the river.

The Clyde Walkway runs 65 kilometres upstream to New Lanark, from the city quays through woodland, farmland and orchard country to the gorges of the Falls of Clyde, where the river drops over four falls. It never climbs above 200 metres, and walkers take three to five days over it.

One family held Pollok, on Glasgow's south side, for more than 700 years, and now Highland cattle graze it.

Pollok Country Park covers 361 acres on the south side of Glasgow. The Maxwell family held the estate for more than 700 years before it was given to the city in 1966. A herd of Highland cattle grazes the parkland, the Burrell Collection stands in the grounds, and in 2008 Pollok was named Europe's best park.

The wildlife film-maker Gordon Buchanan lived for a year and a half between Kingussie and Newtonmore, in the heartland of pine martens, and never saw a single one.

Gordon, who grew up on the Isle of Mull, was there making three half-hour wildlife documentaries, and the martens kept themselves hidden the whole time. Since then their numbers have really bounced back over the last 30 years, and he has seen them on the edge of Glasgow and just south of Crianlarich. For an animal that was once so elusive, he says, it has never been easier to see pine martens in Scotland than it is now. 'It’s not going to be too long before people have pine martens at their feeders in Glasgow'. Not every animal is so obliging: he has caught Scottish wildcats on camera traps, but never conclusively seen one in the wild.
