Scottish Fisheries Museum – Boats, Bunks and Dressing Up

A few hours.

The route

The Scottish Fisheries Museum fills a cluster of old buildings on Anstruther's harbour front, and every gallery has something for children to do.

They can dress up, climb into the bunk beds of a boat's cabin and follow a trail past the great wooden fishing boats. It's ramped throughout, so a buggy goes almost everywhere, and the WAVES Café inside does lunch.

Before you go

The day

Anstruther

A morning round the galleries and the boatyard, with lunch at the WAVES Café by the entrance.

About two and a half hours

  1. Scottish Fisheries Museum

    Scottish Fisheries Museum

The Scottish Fisheries Museum faces Anstruther's harbour, with a public car park right opposite its entrance and another on Shore Street, 150 yards west: both are pay and display from April to September and free in the winter months. It's open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday from 11am, with last entry at 3.30pm, and from November to March it shuts on Tuesdays. Adult tickets are £11 at the time of writing, bought on the day or online ahead; ask at the desk about tickets for children. Every gallery has something for children to do, from dressing up to the bunk beds in a boat's cabin and a giant Connect Four, and there are trails to follow. The boatyard of old fishing boats has no heating, so bring a jumper in winter. The museum is ramped throughout except the Fisherman's Cottage, up a stair, which can be seen through a window. There's no cloakroom, so keep the buggy with you. There's baby changing inside, and an accessible toilet at the main entrance, through the shop. Lunch is at the WAVES Café by the entrance, with its full menu until 3pm and drinks and cakes until 4pm. Over Christmas and New Year, check before going.

If it rains

It's all indoors, though the boatyard is unheated: bring a jumper.
