Architect-Designed Places to Stay on Skye

Skye is home to some wonderful new buildings, from blackhouses reimagined in timber and glass to a hotel with a bold modern wing. These are the places to stay where the building is half the pleasure.

Updated 23 September 2026. Across the Isle of Skye.

In recent years a few architects based on Skye have quietly changed what a house on the island can look like. Taking the shape of the old blackhouse, long and low and built to sit out the weather, they've wrapped it in dark timber and filled it with glass, so the landscape pours in through every window.

We've gathered the places to stay on Skye where the design is part of the experience. There are houses for two above the sea lochs, one of them award-winning, a longhouse on a clifftop headland with sea views from its bedrooms, and a hotel whose striking new wing looks out across the bay to the Cuillin. Book one for the view, and you'll find yourself falling for the building too.
