Architect-Designed Places to Stay in Fife

In Fife, some of the loveliest places to stay are old farm buildings and village houses given a new life by thoughtful architects. These are the places where the building itself is half the pleasure, from a modern longhouse to a cottage from 1590.

Good design makes a holiday feel special from the moment you open the door. Think big windows that bring the fields and woods right inside, old stone walls left bare, and rooms that feel light and calm whatever the weather.

We've gathered Fife's architect-designed places to stay. On a farm near Newburgh, the architects Muir Walker and Pride have designed a contemporary take on the Scottish longhouse. They've also turned an old cart shed into a retreat for two with a sauna, and extended a traditional farm cottage. At one of their houses, a floor-to-ceiling window lets you lie in bed watching the pheasants. In Pittenweem, a cottage built in 1590 has been renovated by an American architect, and an architect's conversion of an old stable keeps its stone walls on show. Several come with a hot tub too.
