Skye Activities & Experiences

Skye has been called a playground for outdoor enthusiasts – and for good reason. Whether you’re in search of high-octane fun or expert tuition, it has a great range of active options, many of them family-friendly.

Skye Activities & Experiences

There’s no shortage of ways to spend your time on Skye—whether you’re here for the hills, the water, or the odd pint between walks. The island has long been a magnet for climbers, paddlers, hikers and wildlife-watchers, but there’s just as much on offer for those after a slower pace or something a bit different.

From boat trips into remote sea lochs to guided hikes in the Cuillin, axe throwing to alpaca meet-and-greets, you’ll find things to do in every corner of the island. You can explore Skye’s coastlines by kayak, visit working distilleries, track golden eagles with a guide, or book a private 4x4 tour to parts of the island few reach. And if your legs are tired or the weather’s moody, there’s always beer tasting, seafood lunches served on deck, or a stop at a quiet walled garden.

Some activities run year-round, others only in summer. Many are small-scale and independently run, so it’s worth booking ahead—especially in high season. What follows isn’t a checklist, but a pick of things worth knowing about. Some are well known, others less so, but they all offer something practical, memorable, or just fun.

RAASAY

Raasay Walled Garden
///sung.treble.grub

“Welcome: please close the gate to keep the rabbits out”. So reads the sign at the entry to this wonderful walled garden, first built in the 16th century, then revitalised in recent times. Fresh produce is sold from an unmanned stall near the entrance, and the planters are a riot of daffodils and tulips in spring.

Isle of Raasay Distillery
///cubic.misfits.laughs

A short wander from the ferry, these fresh, modern premises underline the fact that the distillery has only been bottling whisky since 2020. For a new operation, however, the product is high-quality, matured as it is in rye whisky, chinkapin and Bordeaux casks. Expect a friendly welcome and enjoyable tasting tours.
