The Net Store, a holiday house at Ardheslaig on the Applecross peninsula, stands where Iona Livingstone's grandfather mended his nets and brought in his fishing boat.

Ardheslaig, a small village on the Applecross peninsula in Wester Ross, has made its living from the sea for generations. Iona Livingstone's grandfather kept his net store right on the water there. He mended his white fish nets in it, and brought his boat, the Seaflower, in to refuel. She went to sea from Monday to Saturday, but Ardheslaig was her home, and she came back to it every week. After the herring fishery ended, Iona's father Kenny and his brothers built up the creel fishery for langoustines. Iona has since come home and built a holiday house for four on the site of that net store, and photographs of the Seaflower and her crew hang inside.

The Dipping Lugger in Ullapool has kept its three AA Rosettes and its four other AA awards for the year.

The restaurant with rooms, in an 18th-century manse on Loch Broom, also kept its five-star gold rating, its breakfast award and its award for a notable wine list.

From the covered deck at Fjord, above Ullapool, you can watch the ferry and the little boats come and go across Loch Broom.

Fjord is the larger of the two apartments at Corylus, on the hillside at Braes above Ullapool, and it was turned to face south and west, towards the village and the evening sun. That puts the harbour in the view. From the covered deck you look over the loch towards Ullapool, where the ferry and little boats chug in and out. There's a table for six indoors and another out on the deck, which is built to let you sit outside in most weather. Fjord sleeps four in two bedrooms, and Fjell, the one-bedroom apartment next door, can be booked with it, so the whole building takes six.

Inside Fjell.

Fjell is a one-bedroom apartment for two at Corylus, on the hill at Braes above Ullapool, looking south and east along Loch Broom, so it catches the morning light. It's one of two apartments in a single timber-clad building, each with its own entrance, and Fjord, for four, is next door. Inside it's calm and simple, with an open living room, a blue kitchen with Miele appliances, and a super-king bed that can be made up as twins.

Otters and herons live in the bay beside Rhuroin, on Loch Shieldaig, and sea eagles nest on Shieldaig Island nearby.

Rhuroin is a white house in the pinewoods on the shore of Loch Shieldaig, about 2.5 miles from Shieldaig in Wester Ross, and the wildlife comes almost to the door. Otters and herons live in the sheltered bay next to the house, and at the right time of year pods of dolphins can be seen feeding in the loch. Pine martens, seals and seabirds are about as well, red squirrels live at Rhuroin itself, and sea eagles nest on nearby Shieldaig Island. The owners leave binoculars in the house for a closer look. And because a rough lawn runs straight down to the sea, you can watch from the shore.

Rhuroin is a white Highland house in the woods on the shore of Loch Shieldaig, about 2.5 miles from Shieldaig on the Applecross peninsula. It stands among Scots pine, rowan and birch, with views to the red-roofed house on Inverbain Island and the Torridon mountains. Otters and herons live in the sheltered bay next door, and at the right time of year dolphins feed in the loch.

The Torridon has been given its first Michelin Key.

The Michelin Guide added the Wester Ross hotel to its 2026 list of Key hotels on 18 September, the same year its restaurant, 1887, won a Michelin star. It sits in 58 acres beside Upper Loch Torridon, with a kitchen garden, farm and whisky bar.
