Talisker distillery on Skye works an odd number of stills, five, which may be a leftover from the days when it distilled its whisky three times.

Two wash stills do the first distilling and three spirit stills do the second. That uneven line-up is thought to go back to Talisker's years of triple distillation, when the spirit went through the stills a third time. The third distillation stopped in 1928, but the extra still stayed.

The very first bottle of whisky from Nc'nean, a distillery on the Morvern peninsula, sold for £41,000 at a charity auction.

Annabel Thomas named the distillery she was building on the west coast after Neachneohain, a Gaelic goddess of Scottish folklore, a huntress and fierce protector of nature. In August 2020, after seven years of work, she held the finished whisky at last, and the first 10 bottles were auctioned for five charities close to the team's hearts. As Annabel says, 'We thought we would make around £20,000 for them, but the first bottle alone went for £41,000'. In the end the auction raised £96,000. The organic distillery runs on wood chips from a local forest, bottles its whisky in recycled glass, and is the first distillery in Scotland to be classed as net-zero.

Bunnahabhain distillery on Islay pulled down its warehouses on the shore to make way for a visitor centre.

Bunnahabhain was built in 1881 in a remote bay on the Sound of Islay, the strait between Islay and Jura. In 2017 its owners, Distell, announced £11 million to upgrade its 'scruffy' appearance and turn it into a 'world-class whisky destination'. The three-year programme began in 2019 by demolishing the warehouses along the shoreline, the first step towards a new visitor centre.

The 3,384 bottles at the Scotch Whisky Experience were gathered over 35 years by one collector, Claive Vidiz.

The collection began in the 1970s, when a business colleague gave him six single malts. Diageo bought the collection in October 2006, and it has stood in these cases on the Royal Mile since May 2009.
