Stirlingshire

A caged stone, a spinning boat lift.

Stirlingshire's curiosities run from grim to ingenious. On Mote Hill, by Stirling Castle, the town's old execution stone sits in an iron cage beside two cannons. In the Old Town Cemetery, a sandstone pyramid of 1863 honours Scotland's martyrs, with a marble Bible at its foot. At Falkirk, the world's only rotating boat lift raises boats 24 metres between two canals. At the head of Loch Lomond, a short canal of 1844 was cut so steamers could reach Inverarnan, and Bo'ness keeps a garage of film cars. The two Stirling stones are a short walk apart, so see them together.
