Good coffee is easy to find in Moray. In the village of Garmouth, near the mouth of the Spey, a small roastery and café roasts its own beans. At the foot of Duffus Castle, a shepherd's hut serves barista coffee and speciality tea to walkers and visitors. Both are lovely stops on a drive along the coast. Take a bag of beans home.

The Kula Coffee Hut is a shepherd's hut beside Duffus Castle, near Elgin in Moray, serving barista coffee next to a medieval ruin.

Duffus spent more than half a millennium as a fortress and a home, and became the ancestral seat of the earls of Moray. It has stood empty for more than 300 years now, but its ruins still give off an air of importance. The shepherd's hut gives you a reason to linger, with artisan barista coffee, speciality tea, hot chocolate and treats from local Scottish suppliers to enjoy while you explore the castle. The hut opens seasonally, so check its social media for the hours before you go.

Sam Matthews named his Dufftown coffee and bookshop Beinn, because that is what locals on Speyside call Ben Rinnes, the whisky mountain above the town.

Sam fell in love with Dufftown on holiday and moved up from London with his partner Kelly, because they loved the hills and wanted more time in them. He noticed that nobody in town was running an independent bookshop, so he decided to give it a go. 'My original idea for the name of the shop was Ben Rinnes Books, but that was too long for the sign', he says. Beinn now has around 2,000 books, from poetry to crime, and serves speciality coffee from local roasters. The nearest, Conval Coffee Roasters, even walk their deliveries up from their roastery in Dufftown in reusable containers.
