Lochaber's shops are small and personal, and they're a lovely way to take a little of the place home. On Canna, a whitewashed shop a short walk from the pier runs on trust, with island crafts, groceries and an honesty box. On Eigg, the makers' cooperative by the pier sells knitwear, willow baskets, paintings and seaweed gathered on the shore. Just outside Fort William, a soap maker's visitor centre has a big, bright shop, a café and workshops where you can make your own bars. Book the soap-making workshop ahead, and leave room in the bag for island crafts.

Canna Community Shop.

A short walk from Canna pier, behind green railings and a hand-painted sign, the community shop runs on trust. Help yourself to groceries, cold drinks and crafts made on the island, then pay into the honesty box, and a share of the money goes to island projects. There's a table by the window looking over the harbour. Check the whiteboard on the wall, where people note the wildlife they've seen on Canna and Sanday, from seals to eagles. There's no mobile signal on the island, so it's a good place to slow down.

West Ardnamurchan Garden Community Shop.

On the lighthouse road about three miles out of Kilchoan, a small wooden shop stands beside the West Ardnamurchan Community Garden. The garden began in 2010 to grow food on the peninsula itself and cut the miles it travels. Its fruit and vegetables are grown organically and sold fresh in season, along with flowers, plants, snacks and gifts. It's all self-service, so choose what you want and pay in the honesty box. Look for the chalkboard listing what came out of the ground that day.
