Inverness-shire

Rags at Munlochy, a fox at Wardlaw.

Inverness-shire keeps some strange corners. In the woods by Munlochy, people still tie rags to the trees round an old healing well, hoping an ailment fades as the cloth rots. West of the city, the Lovat Frasers lie in a mausoleum at Kirkhill, where a famous Jacobite lord was long thought to rest. A railway viaduct of red sandstone arches strides across the Nairn valley by Culloden, and an old graveyard sits between the road and Loch Ness near Foyers. Take nothing from the clootie trees, and leave them as you find them.
