Coffee on the clifftop.

Dumfries and Galloway's cafés are friendly and full of home baking. There's a turf-roofed coffee house built into the clifftop at the Mull of Galloway, a café on the harbour at Portpatrick, and a gallery café in Castle Douglas that has been going since 1998. In Dumfries, a coffee shop doubles as a bookshop, and in Langholm a High Street café does generous lunches. Stop often.

At Loch Arthur Creamery, near Dumfries, the cheeses and cakes are made by a community where people with and without learning disabilities live and work together.

As you drive along the A711 from Dumfries towards Dalbeattie, keep an eye out on the left for the farm shop beside a loch. In its café and shop you will find the farm's own organic produce, as well as food made locally, including a range of delicious artisan cheeses and mouthwatering cakes. All of it is produced and managed by members of the Loch Arthur rural working community. It makes the farm shop an easy stop on that road, for lunch in the café or a wedge of cheese to take with you.
