Braemar: The History of Braemar

The roots of Braemar run deep into Highland history. It was long a strategic point at the meeting of old drove routes and military roads, where the Dee valley narrows and the mountains begin. The castle, first built in the 17th century and later converted to a garrison, marks the area's role in the Jacobite Risings.

Queen Victoria’s decision to purchase Balmoral brought new attention to the area in the 19th century. The royal family's continued presence cemented Braemar’s position as a place of interest, and the Highland Games became a showcase of culture and tradition, formalised and attended by successive monarchs.

Despite periods of isolation, especially in winter, Braemar has remained a working community.
