Clipper ships and the Gordons.

Aberdeen's museums tell two of the north-east's big stories, the sea and its soldiers. On Shiprow, a merchant's house of the 1500s and an old church hold the city's free museum of the sea. It runs from clipper ships built in Aberdeen to a nine-metre model of an oil platform, with views over the harbour from the top floor. In the west end, a white Victorian house among lawns tells two hundred years of the Gordon Highlanders, with a full-size First World War trench in the grounds. There's a café with tables in the garden, too. Give each an hour or two, and save them for a wet afternoon.
