Aberdeen
From the harbour wall to the Don.
Aberdeen has a beach a mile from Union Street, and it's a lovely surprise in a granite city. Golden sand sweeps north in a long curve from the harbour wall to the mouth of the River Don, with an esplanade the whole way for walkers, runners and cyclists. At the southern end sits the old fishing village of Footdee, and behind the prom stands an Art Deco ballroom of 1929. Up at the Don, the sand backs onto a nature reserve where seals haul out and terns fish offshore. Dolphins are often seen near the harbour mouth. Bring a windproof for the North Sea breeze.
