New research has revealed the fate of fragments from the Stone of Destiny, the ancient sandstone block linked to Scotland’s monarchy for over 1,000 years.

Used in the coronation of Scottish kings at Scone before being taken to England in 1296, it became a powerful symbol of Scottish nationhood. The fragments were separated during secret repairs in 1950 and distributed by stonemason Bertie Gray to friends and family.

Some were turned into keepsakes or passed down as heirlooms, with one traced to the Queensland Museum in Australia. The original Stone is now displayed at Perth Museum.
