Britain’s rarest freshwater fish, the vendace, is thriving once again in Dumfries and Galloway. A recent survey at Loch Skeen near Moffat found the Ice Age-era species in healthy numbers, almost thirty years after its reintroduction.

The fish, which require deep, cold and well-oxygenated water, had vanished from Scotland until it was reintroduced in the late 1990s. The National Trust for Scotland and University of Glasgow carried out the latest survey, confirming a highly abundant population.

Rangers say the loch’s cool, clean waters provide ideal conditions, though future warming remains a concern.
