At One with the Mountains - An interview with Nick Gardner
Issue 6: Nick Gardner and his wife Janet were living an idyllic life on a croft…

A Munro of 944 metres, number 227 of the 282.
Sgurr Dubh Mor is one of the Black Cuillin peaks on the Isle of Skye, with high neighbours close around it.
Sgurr Alasdair is under a kilometre to the west, Sgurr Mhic Choinnich about as far to the north-west and Sgurr nan Eag about a kilometre to the south. The Inaccessible Pinnacle on Sgurr Dearg stands under two kilometres away.
The MacLeod Estate, whose ground takes in the Cuillin, calls it a range famous the world over. Skye Mountain Rescue Team counts the Cuillin the most challenging range in the UK, and warns that away from the well-used lines the rock is fragile and not always to be trusted.
North-west wind to 16 mph, gusting 29
Rain, about 3 mm
Light from 7.59am to 6.20pm, ten hours
A weather model's forecast for the height of the summit, not a report from the hill. Read the mountain forecast the evening before: Northwest Highlands forecast, Sgurr Dubh Mor, Northwest Highlands mountain forecast, Scottish Avalanche Information Service.
Choose the day you mean to climb.Near or far: the light you will have, and what the summit is likely to be doing.

Mountains and hills can be dangerous places and should always be taken seriously.Skye Mountain Rescue Team, the volunteers who answer calls on Skye, mainly in the Cuillin and on the Trotternish Ridge
Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.
The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
