At One with the Mountains - An interview with Nick Gardner
Issue 6: Nick Gardner and his wife Janet were living an idyllic life on a croft…

A Munro of 986 metres, number 163 of the 282.
The Inaccessible Pinnacle stands in the Black Cuillin on the Isle of Skye, the range the MacLeod Estate calls world famous.
It is the summit of Sgurr Dearg, and Harvey's map of the Cuillin calls it simply the In Pin.
It is a rock climb, not a walk. Abacus Mountain Guides, a firm that takes clients up it, grades it a Moderate rock climb and counts it the most technical of all the 282 Munros, and for many Munro baggers, it says, it is best done with a guide.
Sgurr Mhic Choinnich, its nearest neighbour, is under a kilometre to the south-east, with Sgurr Alasdair and Sgurr na Banachdich each about a kilometre away.
A weather model's forecast for the height of the summit, not a report from the hill. Read the mountain forecast the evening before: Northwest Highlands forecast, Sgurr Dearg, Northwest Highlands mountain forecast, Scottish Avalanche Information Service.
Choose the day you mean to climb.Near or far: the light you will have, and what the summit is likely to be doing.

Mountains and hills can be dangerous places and should always be taken seriously.Skye Mountain Rescue Team, the volunteers who answer calls on Skye, mainly in the Cuillin and on the Trotternish Ridge
Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.
The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
