Creise

A Munro of 1,100 metres, number 50 of the 282.

The hill

Creise stands right beside Meall a' Bhuiridh, the hill of the Glencoe Mountain resort.

The two summits are just over a kilometre apart and only eight metres different in height, which leaves Creise 50th among the 282 Munros.

The resort began life as White Corries, Scotland's first commercial ski area, when the first overhead ski lift went up on Meall a' Bhuiridh in 1956. Creise is a separate summit and has none of that.

Stob Dearg of Buachaille Etive Mor is about four kilometres to the north-west, and the Inveroran Hotel counts Creise among the Munros of the Black Mount Estate.

The start
The nearest car park with published details is the Glencoe Mountain resort's, on the neighbouring hill, at grid reference NN 266 525. Take the way from a route description and the map.
The chairlift
The resort's chairlift is on Meall a' Bhuiridh and reaches 2200ft. Creise is a separate summit: plan the whole day on foot, and the way back without the lift.

Going another day?

Choose the day you mean to climb.Near or far: the light you will have, and what the summit is likely to be doing.

Before you go

Carry

  • A paper map and a compass, and the skill to use them
  • Waterproofs, warm layers, hat and gloves
  • Food and drink
  • A head torch, a whistle and a first aid kit
  • A survival bag
  • Boots with a good grip

Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.

If something goes wrong

  • Dial 999, ask for the police, then mountain rescue
  • Give a six-figure grid reference: the summit is NN 238 506
  • Say how many are hurt, how many are with you, and your number
  • Register to text 999 before the day: text the word register to 999

The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
