Stob a' Choire Odhair

A Munro of 945 metres, number 225 of the 282.

The hill

Stob a' Choire Odhair stands about three miles in a straight line from Loch Tulla, on the Black Mount Estate.

Its bigger neighbour, Stob Ghabhar, is under three kilometres to the west, and Meall a' Bhuiridh is about four and a half kilometres to the north.

The Inveroran Hotel, which sits on the same estate, puts it at more than 90,000 acres and lists Stob a' Choire Odhair among its Munros, with Stob Ghabhar, Meall a' Bhuiridh and Creise. An old military road crosses the estate on its way from Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse.

The way up
Take the start and the way up from a route description and the map before you go.
The road in
ScotWays, the rights of way society, describes a public road running north over Victoria Bridge to Forest Lodge, on the old road from Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse. It is a road, not a way up the hill, and ScotWays says its descriptions hold some errors, so check the map.
Stalking
Watch for local signs: Mountaineering Scotland asks walkers to follow them where an estate has not published its stalking plans.
Summit
Grid reference NN 257 459
Food
The Inveroran Hotel, whose address is Bridge of Orchy, has a shop selling hot and cold snacks, drinks and walking essentials. Ask about its season and hours before counting on it. The hotel says a mobile signal is unlikely there.
On the hill today

A weather model's forecast for the height of the summit, not a report from the hill. Read the mountain forecast the evening before: West Highlands forecast, Stob a' Choire Odhair, Southwest Highlands mountain forecast, Glencoe avalanche forecast.

Before you go

Carry

  • A paper map and a compass, and the skill to use them
  • Waterproofs, warm layers, hat and gloves
  • Food and drink
  • A head torch, a whistle and a first aid kit
  • A survival bag
  • Boots with a good grip

Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.

If something goes wrong

  • Dial 999, ask for the police, then mountain rescue
  • Give a six-figure grid reference: the summit is NN 257 459
  • Say how many are hurt, how many are with you, and your number
  • Register to text 999 before the day: text the word register to 999

The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
