The hill

Carn an Righ stands in Perth and Kinross, in the hills between Pitlochry and Braemar, nearly seven miles in a straight line from the Spittal of Glenshee.

It has two Munros for close neighbours, each about two and a half kilometres away: Glas Tulaichean to the south-east and Beinn Iutharn Mhor to the north-east. Glas Tulaichean is on the Dalmunzie Estate, which goes back to 1510.

Starts from
Dalmunzie Estate, on whose ground the neighbouring Glas Tulaichean stands, has two car parks for hillwalkers at the Spittal of Glenshee.
The ground
Next door, Dalmunzie Estate stalks its own ground between 1 July and 15 February, never on a Sunday: check before you go and follow any signs.

Dalmunzie Estate has a free car park for hillwalkers near the start of its drive at the Spittal of Glenshee. Its main car park, at Dalmunzie Castle Hotel, PH10 7QG, is for hotel guests and golfers, with limited room for hillwalkers and a fee paid at reception.
Toilets
The nearest public toilets are at the Glenshee Ski Centre car park, up the pass.

Before you go

Carry

  • A paper map and a compass, and the skill to use them
  • Waterproofs, warm layers, hat and gloves
  • Food and drink
  • A head torch, a whistle and a first aid kit
  • A survival bag
  • Boots with a good grip

Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.

If something goes wrong

  • Dial 999, ask for the police, then mountain rescue
  • Give a six-figure grid reference: the summit is NO 028 772
  • Say how many are hurt, how many are with you, and your number
  • Register to text 999 before the day: text the word register to 999

The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
