At One with the Mountains - An interview with Nick Gardner
Issue 6: Nick Gardner and his wife Janet were living an idyllic life on a croft…

A Munro of 1,081 metres, number 61 of the 282.
Beinn a' Chreachain is the highest of the five Munros in the hills above Bridge of Orchy and Loch Tulla.
It stands on the western edge of Perth and Kinross, next to Rannoch Moor, with Beinn Achaladair about three kilometres to the west and Beinn Mhanach about the same distance to the south.
An old drove road to Rannoch comes this way too. ScotWays, the rights of way charity, records it leaving the north-east corner of Loch Tulla for Achallader farm, then following the Water of Tulla to Gorton bothy.
A weather model's forecast for the height of the summit, not a report from the hill. Read the mountain forecast the evening before: West Highlands forecast, Southeastern Highlands forecast, Beinn a' Chreachain, Perth and Kinross, Southwest Highlands mountain forecast, Scottish Avalanche Information Service.
Choose the day you mean to climb.Near or far: the light you will have, and what the summit is likely to be doing.

Starting from the A82, 4km north of Bridge of Orchy at the northeast corner of Loch Tulla, a ScotWays sign indicates this old route to Rannoch initially follows the farm road northeast to Achallader farm where there is parking.ScotWays, the rights of way charity, on the old drove road to Rannoch
Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.
The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
