Inner Hebrides, Islands
The World Stone Skimming Championships
Introduction
The World Stone Skimming Championships take place each September in an old slate quarry on Easdale, a small car-free island off Scotland’s west coast. The rules are simple: three throws, stones must bounce twice, furthest skim wins. What started as a local gathering in the 1980s now draws competitors from across the world. Ferries run on demand. Stones are selected from a communal pile near the water’s edge. There’s a barbecue, a bar, and prizes for juniors, islanders, and over-50s. You can watch from the edge of the quarry pool, close enough to hear the first bounce across the surface.
