Inshegra

A tiny crofting township on the south shore of Loch Inchard, on the road to Kinlochbervie, among bare hills and lochans in the far north-west.

On the road that runs along Loch Inchard to Kinlochbervie, in the far north-west corner of Scotland, Inshegra is one of a string of small crofting townships: a scattering of houses and dark stone cottages by the water, with bare, rocky hills and lochans all around.

From the road the loch opens out towards the sea, inlets wind between layered headlands, and rounded peaks rise over the moor, glowing gold on a fine evening. A handful of people live and croft here still, and the old village school, which once taught the children of the township, looks out over the loch.

It is a place to pause on the way to Kinlochbervie, with its busy fishing harbour, or out towards Sandwood and the coast. Stop considerately, as this is a working village, and take in one of the quietest corners of the north.
