Welcome

There’s a lot of history at Fraserburgh, and a lot of lovely links golf too.

The club was founded in 1777, and it counts itself the fifth oldest in Scotland. Since 1891 it has played at Philorth Links, just south of the town, where the Corbiehill course rolls through the big sand dunes along Fraserburgh Bay. James Braid redesigned it in 1922, and much of his work is still there. Climb to the 3rd tee, on top of Corbiehill, for a view over the whole course. A round costs £150, and there’s a nine-hole course, Rosehill, if you’d like a few more holes.

Hole highlights

The course climbs Corbiehill early on, and from the 14th tee the closing stretch heads back towards the clubhouse.

  1. 2

    Braids Bellow

    Par 4 · 391 yards

The club calls it a typical Braid hole, and the one that shows his 1922 redesign best. It runs uphill to a raised green, with big mounds on the fairway, and it’s the only hole on the course without a bunker.

  2. 3

    Whytes Shelter

    Par 4 · 331 yards

The tee is on top of Corbiehill, with a view over the whole course, so take a moment here. The hole plays downhill, with a big fairway bunker at about 250 yards, to a green that sends anything short rolling back towards you.

  3. 9

    Lang Whang

    Par 4 · 458 yards

The longest par four on the course and rated the hardest. The last 60 yards or so of fairway are all bumps and hollows, so even a short second needs some thought.

  4. 12

    The Castle

    Par 4 · 389 yards

Named after Cairnbulg Castle nearby, home of Lord Saltoun, who gave the land for the course in 1891. The drive has to carry a narrow neck of fairway before it opens out.

  5. 13

    The Hillocks

    Par 4 · 341 yards

One of the best known holes on the course, named for its many mounds and hillocks. Two big mounds sit around the landing area, each with a bunker in front, and the large green slopes from back to front.

Did you know

Golf in Fraserburgh was first written down in 1613, when the kirk session chastised a boy called John Burnett for playing at the gouff on a Sunday instead of going to church.

He was sent to the maister’s stool for correction.
