Yellowcraig – A Big Play Park, Dunes and a View of Fidra

A few hours.

The route

Yellowcraig, by Dirleton on the East Lothian coast, puts a big play park in the woods a short walk from a broad, sandy cove.

Out in the water sits Fidra, the little lighthouse island said to have inspired Treasure Island. There's a wheelchair-accessible path and ramp with views of the coast, though the beach itself is soft sand.

    An attraction

Yellowcraig's car park is at the end of the lane signposted from Dirleton. It's £3 a day at the time of writing, by pay and display or RingGo, and the ticket works at every East Lothian coastal car park that day. The toilets by the car park open every day from 9am to 4pm from October to March, and to 8pm in summer. A large children's play area sits just off the main path towards the beach. Beyond the woods and dunes is a broad, sandy cove looking out to Fidra and its 1885 lighthouse, the island said to have inspired Treasure Island, where puffins nest in summer. A wheelchair-accessible path and ramp give views of the coast, and there are picnic benches by the toilets, one with wheelchair access; the beach itself is soft sand. In autumn there are fungi to spot in the woods. There's no café, so bring a flask and a picnic.

If it rains

It's all outdoors, with no shelter but the toilets: save it for a dry morning.
