Woodlands Glencoe – Golf, Segways and Archery by Loch Linnhe

A day.

Directions

The route

Woodlands Glencoe is a family-run estate on the shore of Loch Linnhe at the foot of Glen Coe, with a nine-hole golf course, Segways and archery all in one place.

Play a round with the mountains all around you, try something new with the estate's instructors, then drive into the glen for lunch at the Clachaig Inn. It suits families with older children.

Before you go

  1. Book accommodation nearby

If you are staying over: here are ours nearest where the day starts and ends.

The nearest of ours is Woodlands Glencoe, 5 miles away. Sleeps 2.

  2. Book Woodlands Glencoe

Book the Segway and the archery at Woodlands Glencoe online or on 01855 811811 before you go, for back-to-back times late in the morning after your round: booked together they're 25% off, the Segway needs a minimum weight of 45kg and the archery an age of six or over, and summer is busy.

The day

Glencoe

Nine holes beside the loch, a Segway ride and a bow among the trees, and a hearty lunch up in the glen.

About five and a half hours

  1. Woodlands Glencoe

    Woodlands Glencoe

Woodlands Glencoe is a family-run estate on the A828 just south of the Ballachulish Bridge, and you park at its reception car park, beside the Kitchen Food Truck. Start on the nine-hole course, which Woodlands says Bunkered magazine named the best nine holes in Scotland, with Loch Linnhe below and the mountains all round. There's no tee time to book, so just turn up, though Woodlands asks you to pay online before you arrive where you can. Nine holes are £24.95 for an adult and £14.95 for a junior at the time of writing, and the hire-and-play ticket, at £39.95 or £29.95, adds clubs, a trolley and balls. Then stay on for a Segway ride and archery, back to back: book the two together on 01855 811811 and Woodlands takes 25% off. The Off-Road Segway Adventure is 50 minutes through the estate's woods and meadows with a guide, with a minimum weight of 45kg. Forest Archery is for anyone six or over, with a qualified instructor to start you off. Woodlands posts no winter timetable, so ring or book online for your times, and in summer book well ahead. On Wednesday to Sunday mornings the food truck does breakfast from 9am, at weekends only from December to Easter, and it's shut all November.

    Lunch

Lunch is up in Glen Coe itself, 14 minutes' drive east, at the Clachaig Inn, where travellers have stopped for hundreds of years, with a real fire in the Boots Bar. Food is served every day from midday until 9pm, with real ales and long lists of Scottish whiskies and gins, and dogs are welcome in all its bars. Children eat with an adult in the Bidean Lounge, as the Boots Bar and the Snug are for over-18s. If it's full, the café at the Glencoe Visitor Centre, about a mile back down the road, is open until the centre shuts, 4pm in winter.

If it rains

Golf, the Segway and archery are all outdoors and go ahead in most weather, so bring waterproofs; in a downpour, take the clubhouse by its fire for a coffee (the bar opens at 1pm) and go up to the Clachaig, where every room is under a roof.
