Bow Fiddle Rock – Sunset and a Fish Supper
A few hours.
The route
Bow Fiddle Rock is a great arch of pale quartzite standing in the sea off Portknockie, and it's at its loveliest as the light goes.
Watch the sun go down from the cliff top, then pick up fish and chips from the village chip shop, cooked fresh to order. It's a simple, happy autumn or winter evening out on the Moray coast.

Bow Fiddle Rock
An attraction
In Portknockie, park in the small free car park on Patrol Road, above the shore, then it's about 5 minutes' walk along the cliff-top path to look down on Bow Fiddle Rock. The arch is Cullen quartzite more than 650 million years old, shaped like the tip of a fiddler's bow, and streaked white by the gulls, fulmars and shags that roost on it. Come about half an hour before sunset and watch the light change on the stone. There's no fence, no light and no toilet here, so keep well back from the edge and bring a torch for the walk back to the car. Dogs should be on a lead on the cliff top.

Portknockie Fish and Chip Shop
Supper
Supper is 2 minutes' drive into the village at the Portknockie Fish and Chip Shop on Union Street. It opens Thursday to Sunday, 4.30pm to 7.30pm, and everything is cooked fresh to order, with good children's meals and its own crunchy pop-pop chicken. It gets busy, so phone your order in from 10am on 01542 841888 and collect it on the way back from the rock. Cards are taken over £5. On other evenings, the Cullen Bay Hotel, 4 minutes east, serves dinner from 5pm every day.
If it rains
This one is for a dry evening. In rain or a gale, look at the arch from the car park end of the path and eat your fish and chips in the car with the sea in front of you.
