Where to stay in Angus

Where to stay in Angus

Angus makes you slow down. It runs from red sandstone cliffs on the coast, carved into arches and caves, right up into quiet glens at the edge of the Cairngorms. In between lie rolling farmland, market towns and castles, with Glamis standing at the end of its long avenue of trees. Arbroath has a ruined abbey of red stone and a harbour where smokies are still made in the back streets, while Montrose has miles of golden sand and a tidal basin alive with birds. Walk the cliff path to Auchmithie, head up Glen Clova for the day or wander the streets of Kirriemuir, where J.M. Barrie was born.

Nàdair

About five miles west of Kirriemuir, Nàdair is a modern farmhouse-style barn clad in timber, with the rolling Angus hills behind it. Inside, calm contemporary rooms mix with vintage finds: a farmhouse kitchen with a big island, a dining table for six by the patio doors and a wood-burning stove in the corner. The ground-floor bedroom has a four-poster and an antique armoire, and upstairs there's a twin room beside a snug. The garden is enclosed, with a fire pit for evenings outside. It sleeps six, and there's room for two dogs too.
